Michael Mao Dance to perform at Roberts Theatre

Michael Mao Dance

Dancer performs Michael Mao Dance choreography

The critically acclaimed New York-based modern dance company Michael Mao Dance will perform in Roberts Theatre at Grinnell College on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m.

Mao's work is infused with a visceral, elemental power. His dances fill the stage with compelling images and enthrall audiences with their emotional immediacy. Rooted in the traditions of American modern dance, Mao's works are graced with the formal considerations of classical ballet and reveal the choreographer's Asian heritage in their spare yet expansive choreographic means. His choreography has been presented throughout the United States, Mexico, China, Paris, Oslo, Hong Kong, Stockholm, Italy, and in Edinburgh, UK. He has received grants and funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Rockefeller Foundation and various other corporations and foundations.

Mao's work with teen immigrants has been supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. His program, ESLdance™ – Learning English Through Dance, was designated in 1999 by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Model Program to be replicated nationally. Mao has been a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Alliance, Pennsylvania On Tour, and Center for Arts Education. He is on the Board of Directors of New York State Alliance for Arts Education, and a member of the New York City Board of Education's Blueprint Committee for Dance, and continues to be a facilitator for its professional development projects.
