Volleyball Pounces Past Principia 3-0

Volleyball Pounces Past Principia 3-0

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The volleyball team beat Principia Tuesday night in three sets to get the 3-0 victory at home and win their 20th match of the season.

The offensive attack for the Lady Panthers was balanced as three women -- Ansley DeVrieze, Corinne Coon, and Nicole Schaeffer -- led the team with eight kills.  Tricia Gall added seven kills.

The defensive efforts were headlined by Jamie Schollenbruch with 17 digs and Marie Kendrick and Gall with two blocks each.

"This is a group that only wins as a team," said head coach Tom Ackerman.  "We are extremely efficient.  Our flexibility allows us to get the perfect match ups and we have so many weapons."

The recent success can be partly attributed to the insertion of Hannah Groves into the lineup.  Her role has allowed Greenville to avenge an earlier loss to Lincoln Chrisitian and beat Principia in their second meeting.

Greenville now has three straight seasons with 20 or more wins and can clinch no worse than a tie for the regular season conference championship next week with a win Tuesday night at Blackburn. With a win over Blackburn, Greenville would serve as the conference tournament host on Saturday, Nov. 3, for the second time in three years.

The Lady Panthers (20-7. 14-1 SLIAC) take the court again Saturday, Oct. 27 when they travel to Millikin.

Lady Panther Soccer Beats Principia to Advance to SLIAC Championship

Lady Panther Soccer Beats Principia to Advance to SLIAC Championship

ELSAH, Ill.-- The GC Women's Soccer Team upset the No. 1 seed, Principia, winning the game 1-0, to advance to the SLIAC Championship.

Kieley Leach was credited with the game's lone goal but said it was a "team effort," as the ball was sent into the box when Claire Conwell-Vargas took a beautiful corner kick that sent the ball into dangerous territory. The ball bobbled around in Principia's defensive end, with both teams trying to gain possession, but Leach had the last word, putting the ball in the back of the net and bringing GC up 1-0.

"The outcome tonight could not have been accomplished without incredible team effort," Leach explained, "Not only did we come out with a win, but we made a mark in GC history!."

This win marks the first time in school history that Greenville has beaten SLIAC powerhouse, Principia.

The women will play in the SLIAC Championship game Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. when they take on Webster in hopes of winning the tournament for the first time in GC Women's Soccer history.
