Men's Soccer Eliminated from SLIAC Tournament in Overtime

GREENVILLE, Ill.-- The GC Panther soccer team was elimiated from the SLIAC Tournament, losing 1-0 to No. 3 seed Westminster in overtime.

Westminster scored three minutes into overtime after a foul was called just outside the penalty box. Michael McDonough crossed the ball to Jason Joshua who scored for the Blue Jays.

GC goalkeeper, Thomas Crown, ended the night with 3 saves.

This loss ends the Panthers 2012 season. They finished an impressive season with a record of 10-6-3.

Men's Soccer Ranked 16th in Final NCCAA Poll

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Greenville College Men's Soccer team was ranked 16th in the final NCCAA Division I 2012 ranking, collecting 5 total points.

GC finished their 2012 season with a record of 10-6-3.

California Baptist University, Fresno Pacific University, and Oklahoma Wesleyan University captured the top three spots in the ranking, receiving 15, 98, and 85 total points, respectively.

GC was one of three schools in the North Central Region to be recognized. Both Olivet Nazarene University and Bethel College were also ranked, Olivet coming in 10th and Bethel being placed in 13th.

Men's Soccer Beats MacMurray 1-0

Men's Soccer Beats MacMurray 1-0

JACKSONVILLE, Ill.-- The Greenville Men's Soccer team beat MacMurray 1-0 with a late goal by Sean McQuillan.

McQuillan scored a header with just 2 minutes remaining in the game to get the game winner and bring home the win for the Panthers. Both Dan Ruder and Ryan Haas were credited with the assist.

GC outshot MacMurray 16-4 in the game, with Nathan Mayberry leading the team with 5 shots. Thomas Crown was credited with 2 saves to earn the SLIAC shutout.

This win brings Greenville into the nuber two spot in the SLIAC with a record of 9-5-2 (4-0-2 SLIAC). The team plays again Saturday, Oct. 27 when they take on Conference rival Webster in a battle for SLIAC dominance.

Lady Panther Soccer Dominates MacMurray 5-0

JACKSONVILLE, Ill.-- The GC women traveled to MacMurray and beat the Highlanders 5-0 to earn another SLIAC win.

Kelsey Panzau put the ball in the net 7 minutes into the game when Claire Conwell-Vargas passed the ball to her for the assist. 14 minutes later, Conwell-Vargas scored an unassisted goal to bring the score to 2-0 GC at halftime.

The second half proved to be even more eventful for the Panthers, as Jen Williams scored for GC just 5 minutes into the half, with Natalie Henneberry getting the assist. Kayla Panzau was next to get on the board for Greenville, scoring the the game's 50th minute. The last goal of the match came when Chelsea Kirkley scored a header off of a corner kick by Allie Rueter. Kirkley's goal brought the game to its final score of 5-0 GC.

Greenville outshot MacMurray 28-5 in the game and earned a shutout.

This win gives the Panthers a 8-7-1 (4-2 SLIAC) record. The ladies take to the field again tomorrow, Oct. 24, when they travel to Eureka to play the rescheduled game from last week.

Men's Soccer Ties Webster 2-2

GREENVILLE, Ill.-- The Greenville Men's Soccer team played Webster University to a 2-2 tie with both teams having many opportunities to score throughout the game.

Goals were scored for GC by Dusty Knoll, in the 33rd minute, and Sean McQuillan, with an assist by Nathan Mayberry, in the 66th minute. Webster's Clint Carder and Agustin Villalba got the goals for Webster in the 17th and 70th minutes, respectively.

The game went into two overtime periods of 10 minutes each, but neither team could capitalize on their opportunities so the final score remained a 2-2 tie.

Greenville recorded 19 shots while Webster only had 12 in the game. GC keeper, Thomas Crown, made 3 saves for the Panthers.

This tie brings the men's record to 9-5-3 (4-0-3 SLIAC). The Panthers will play again on Monday, Oct. 29 as they travel to Eureka to take on the Red Devils.

5 Panthers Earn SLIAC Soccer Post-Season Honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-- Five GC men's soccer players were awarded post-season honors, including Nathan Mayberry who was on the SLIAC First Team.

Mayberry, a senior from Mascoutah, Ill., had two goals and three assists in the 2012 season. He also holds the GC record for most games started in a career.

Matt Cowman, Thomas Crown, and Sean McQuillan all earned Second Team. Cowman, a senior Quincy, Ill., finished the season with two assists. His defensive efforts in the midfield were a key to Greenville's success this year. Cowman was also a member of the All-Sportmanship team. Crown, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., led GC from the goal. He allowed only 18 goals, made 53 saves, and topped the SLIAC with a 1.01 save percentage and earning SLIAC Player of the Week once this season. McQuillan, a senior from Glasgow, Scotland, finished 2012 with 5 goals and 2 assists for the Panthers. He controlled the midfield for GC this year and had a strong presence that helped GC control possession of the ball. McQuillan was also Player of the Year once this season.

Sophomore, Dusy Knoll, recieved a SLIAC Honorable Mention. Knoll, a defender from Arnold, Mo., recieved Player of the Week honors once during the season and scored one goal this season.

McQuillan Awarded Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-- Greenville's Sean McQuillan has been named the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 22-28.

McQuillan had two goals in two games played last week. He scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory versus MacMurray College to get the important game-winner that helped secure the Panthers a spot in the SLIAC Tournament. McQuillan also scored a crucial goal as Greenville battled first place Webster University to a 2-2 draw in double overtime.

McQuillan,  a senior from Glasgow, Scotland (St. Thomas Aquinas), was flattered to receive the award.

"It is an honor to be Player of the Week, but it wouldn't have happened if it were not for my great teammates around me, " McQuillan explains. "Hopefully we can just continue our success against SLIAC opponents as we enter into the Conference tournament and then go all the way!"

4 Panthers Get NCCAA Soccer Recognition

GREENVILLE, Ill.-- Four men from the GC Soccer team got postseason recognition from the NCCAA; Dusty Knoll, Nathan Mayberry, Sean McQuillan,and Robert Wright.

All four men were named to the NCCAA Division I All-Region Team. Greenville is part of the North central Region, which is one of the most competitive in the NCCAA.

Knoll, a sophomore from Arnold, Mo., was a strong center defender for Greenville this season, scoring one goal and helping GC earn 3 shutouts. He was also recognized in the SLIAC, being recognized as an Honorable Mention and earning the Defensive Player of the Week title for the week of Oct. 15-21.

Mayberry, a senior from Mascoutah, Ill., started the most games for GC thos season. He was also named to the SLIAC All-Conference First Team,. Mayberry was credited with 2 goals and 3 assists this year and led his team vocally, as a captain.

McQuillan, a senior from Glasgow, Scotland, was another strong presence for Greenville this season. He scored 5 goals and had 2 assists, while playing as a defensive midfielder. McQuillan also earned a spot on the SLIAC Second Team and was the SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 22-28.

Wright, a junior transfer from Hazelwood, Mo., recorded an impressive 6 goals and 4 assists this season. He was the SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7

Panther Soccer Ranked 15th in NCCAA

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- GC is currently ranked 15th in the 2012 NCCAA Men's Soccer Division I Official Top 15 Ranking, with a record of 10-6-3.

Greenville, part of the North Central Region, received 11 total points to be placed in the 15th spot in the ranking.

Fresno Pacific University is in the top spot right now, getting 3 first place votes and improving their record to 16-4-0. Oklahoma Wesleyan University is ranked second, receiving 4 first place votes and a record of 19-1-1.

A final season ranking will be published next month.

Lady Panther Soccer Beats Principia to Advance to SLIAC Championship

ELSAH, Ill.-- The GC Women's Soccer Team upset the No. 1 seed, Principia,winning the game 1-0, to advance to the SLIAC Championship.

Kieley Leach was credited with the game's lone goal but said it was a "team effort," as the ball was sent into the box when Claire Conwell-Vargas took a beautiful corner kick that sent the ball into dangerous territory. The ball bobbled around in Principia's defensive end, with both teams trying to gain possession, but Leach had the last word, putting the ball in the back of the net and bringing GC up 1-0.

"The outcome tonight could not have been accomplished without incredible team effort," Leach explained, "Not only did we come out with a win, but we made a mark in GC history!."

This win marks the first time in school history that Greenville has beaten SLIAC powerhouse, Principia.

The women will play in the SLIAC Championship game Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. when they take on Webster in hopes of winning the tournament for the first time in GC Women's Soccer history.

GC Men's Soccer Ranked 13th in NCCAA

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Greenville Men's Soccer team was included in the NCCAA Top 15 for the week ending November 6.

Greenville College was the only school in the North Central Region included in the Top 15. GC had a record of 9-5-3 when the Top 15 was determined. The Panthers received 17 total points to put them in the No. 13 spot in the ranking.

Ohio Wesleyan University claimed the top spot in the ranking, with Southern Wesleyan University and Cedarville University being ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Panther Soccer with Shutout Win at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill.-- The Greenville College Men's Soccer team traveled to Eureka Red Devil territory and brought home the 3-0 win in their last regular season match.

The first Panther goal was scored by Jacob Krisher, with the assist from Aaron Mulholland. Sean McQuillan, who was the SLIAC Player of the Week last week, was next to find the back of the net for GC, with Nathan Mayberry being credited with the assist. Dan Ruder was the last Greenville player to get a goal in the game, bringing the final score to 3-0 Greenville.

Goalkeeper, Thomas Crown, was credited with the shutout.

The Panthers finished the regular season with a record of  10-5-3 (5-0-3 SLIAC). The men will take on Westminster at home Thursday, Nov. 1 in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament.
