Greenville College Student Takes a Shot at a Million

Greenville College Student Takes a Shot at a Million

Steve Mislich was focused on one thing while jogging through New York City in the rain - just make it to the audition. Little did he know the summer audition would lead to a fall appearance on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" as well as $25,000 in winnings.

"Nothing can compare to the thrill of being on national television!" said Mislich, a senior at Greenville College from Altamont, IL who appeared as a contestant on a special Halloween-themed edition of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," on Nov. 2. "The producers, the other contestants, the audience, and the host were all fantastic and extremely helpful. Everyone genuinely wanted me to win."

Mislich successfully navigated his way through the first ten questions with an accumulated Millionaire Bank of $63,600 and one remaining lifeline. He chose to go for $100,000 on his eleventh question, and he used his last lifeline to poll the audience. Mislich went with the audience advice, but provided an incorrect answer. He left the show with $25,000 and some newfound notoriety.

Mislich, a math and computer science major at Greenville College, plans to pursue a doctorate degree after he graduates in the spring. His Millionaire prize will provide added savings. He also plans to purchase plane tickets to visit his girlfriend, Katie, who currently lives 600 miles away.

Greenville College Acquires Chartreuse Bed and Breakfast

Greenville College Acquires Chartreuse Bed and Breakfast

Thanks to generous donors, Greenville College has acquired property that will add beauty and function to its campus. On Dec. 19 the college purchased 422 E. Main St., site of the Chartreuse Bed and Breakfast. The acquisition features a spacious, beautifully renovated building and grounds in a prime location contiguous to campus.

The purchase was made possible by a designated gift from Enoch and Beth Poon. Mr. Poon, president of Innovative International LLC and a 1986 graduate of Greenville College, has stayed in the Chartreuse during recent visits as a guest speaker in the college's professional business leaders class. He saw value in the college owning the property.

While it is not known immediately how the college will use the space, Acting President Randy Bergen is confident that the purchase will help relieve tight quarters elsewhere on campus.

"We are enormously grateful to Enoch and Beth for this gift, particularly when we are short on space," said Bergen. "This building immediately gives us options for relocating offices and potentially opening up space in other areas for additional classrooms."

The college owns most of the property that surrounds its newest acquisition. The Watson and Bonnie Tidball Alumni House and Welcome Center and Whitlock Music Center are just one block north.

"Its proximity to Scott Field, the center of our campus, makes it a good fit for the college," said Dana Funderburk, vice president for finance. "It takes just minutes to walk from its front door to the student union, library, and gymnasium."

The college community is thankful for Mr. and Mrs. Poon's vision and action. The purchase creates opportunities for the college to address other critical needs and pursue its strategic goals without major investment in architectural fees or the construction of new buildings.

"We are excited about the generous gift of the historic Chartreuse B&B property by Mr. and Mrs. Poon," said Rebecca Smith, chair of the Greenville College board of trustees. "Not only are we grateful to donors who partner with us to continue to give back to their institution of higher learning, but we look forward to incorporating this property into the campus resources which enable us to better serve and deliver our mission to our students."

Owners of the Chartreuse Bed and Breakfast, Cheryl Barnes Werner and Marilae Latham, are pleased with the property's new owners. "I have loved hosting Greenville College families, chapel speakers, and guests over the past five years and count it a privilege that our paths have crossed for this short time," said Werner, who plans on moving closer to her family in Alabama. "We are hopeful that the next use of the house will be blessed as we have been blessed."

Greenville College Announces Choir’s 2013 Spring Concert Season

The Greenville College Choir (Greenville, Illinois) is pleased to announce its concert itinerary for 2012-2013.  Founded in 1927 by Dr. Robert W. Woods, the Greenville Choir has attained a widespread reputation for performing sacred choral music of the highest quality. During the current 86th Anniversary year the Greenville College Choir has been invited to perform in St. Louis with the professional early music ensemble known as the Kingsbury Ensemble (April).  The choir will also take an extended 10-day spring tour to the South Central United States.

The Greenville Choir consists of 45 undergraduate students from various fields of liberal arts study, including the College's five music degree programs. As the flagship choral ensemble of Greenville College, the choir presents as many as twenty off-campus performances each year as part of its annual tour. Students' dedication to the program is consistently made evident by the professional quality of their performances.

Conductor Jeffrey S. Wilson received his Bachelor of Music degree in piano from Augustana College (Rock Island, Illinois). He earned the Master of Music degree in choral music and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Greenville College Welcomes Hauerwas for First Annual McAllaster Lecture

Many esteemed speakers have visited Greenville College through the years, and Dr. Stanley Hauerwas will rank among the most notable when he comes to campus on Nov. 26. He is a theologian who has explored philosophy, ethics and other disciplines in his effort to truthfully articulate the nature of the Christian life and the importance of the church.

Hauerwas was named "America's Best Theologian" by Time magazine in 2001, and his book, A Community of Character: Toward a Constructive Christian Social Ethic, was selected as one of the 100 most important books on religion of the 20th century. Hauerwas attained international recognition as a Gifford Lecturer at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland in 2001. He holds degrees from Southwestern University, Yale University, and University of Edinburgh.

Hauerwas will have the honor of presenting Greenville College's first McAllaster Lecture. The lecture series is an annual event sponsored by the school's McAllaster Scholars Program. The McAllaster Lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 26 when Hauerwas, a professor with a joint appointment at Duke Divinity School and Duke Law School, will deliver a lecture entitled "Faith and Politics." Hauerwas will also give a chapel address at Greenville College on Nov. 26 at 9:30 a.m. Both presentations at the Wilson Recital Hall in the Whitlock Music Center are free and open to the public.

"Hauerwas has been the most influential Christian theologian in America for the last several decades," said McAllaster Scholars Program Director Dr. Kent Dunnington. "Of course, part of what he makes us think about is how being Christian and being American are not the same thing. We're priveleged to have him come to our campus to speak on 'Faith and Politics'"
