Panthers Rearing to Go in 2012-2013

The GC Men's Basketball team are ready to begin their 2012-2013 season and, though they will miss their graduating seniors, they have a string recruiting class that is sure to propel the team through the SLIAC.

Last season, GC scored an average of 85.8 points per game, recorded 39.1 rebounds per game, and had 9.1 steals per game. They ended their season with a record of 15-9, going 10-6 in the SLIAC. They failed to qualify for the Conference tournament

Greenville will miss the presence of the 2012 graduating class. GC lost their top four scoring players from the 2011-2012 season, Markeith Brown, K.J. Hilliard, Jonas McBride, and Dondrale Campbell. These four men combined to score an average of 45.1 of the Panthers' average of 85.8 points per game. The absense of these senior leaders from last year have left big shoes for the team to fill.

Fortunately, the Greenville staff thinks they have found just the men to do it. Transfer students, MarQuel Brown and Tevin Rollins, both from Los Angeles, Calif., are expected to be big for Greenville this year. The team also returns upperclassman Ben Giertz, Alex Mumphard, and Jordan Smith, all players who contributed last season and will step up to lead the team.

The Panthers will take to the court on Friday Nov. 16, when they travel to Westminster to play in the Tip-Off Classic.

5 Panthers Earn SLIAC Soccer Post-Season Honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-- Five GC men's soccer players were awarded post-season honors, including Nathan Mayberry who was on the SLIAC First Team.

Mayberry, a senior from Mascoutah, Ill., had two goals and three assists in the 2012 season. He also holds the GC record for most games started in a career.

Matt Cowman, Thomas Crown, and Sean McQuillan all earned Second Team. Cowman, a senior Quincy, Ill., finished the season with two assists. His defensive efforts in the midfield were a key to Greenville's success this year. Cowman was also a member of the All-Sportmanship team. Crown, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., led GC from the goal. He allowed only 18 goals, made 53 saves, and topped the SLIAC with a 1.01 save percentage and earning SLIAC Player of the Week once this season. McQuillan, a senior from Glasgow, Scotland, finished 2012 with 5 goals and 2 assists for the Panthers. He controlled the midfield for GC this year and had a strong presence that helped GC control possession of the ball. McQuillan was also Player of the Year once this season.

Sophomore, Dusy Knoll, recieved a SLIAC Honorable Mention. Knoll, a defender from Arnold, Mo., recieved Player of the Week honors once during the season and scored one goal this season.

4 Panthers Get NCCAA Soccer Recognition

GREENVILLE, Ill.-- Four men from the GC Soccer team got postseason recognition from the NCCAA; Dusty Knoll, Nathan Mayberry, Sean McQuillan,and Robert Wright.

All four men were named to the NCCAA Division I All-Region Team. Greenville is part of the North central Region, which is one of the most competitive in the NCCAA.

Knoll, a sophomore from Arnold, Mo., was a strong center defender for Greenville this season, scoring one goal and helping GC earn 3 shutouts. He was also recognized in the SLIAC, being recognized as an Honorable Mention and earning the Defensive Player of the Week title for the week of Oct. 15-21.

Mayberry, a senior from Mascoutah, Ill., started the most games for GC thos season. He was also named to the SLIAC All-Conference First Team,. Mayberry was credited with 2 goals and 3 assists this year and led his team vocally, as a captain.

McQuillan, a senior from Glasgow, Scotland, was another strong presence for Greenville this season. He scored 5 goals and had 2 assists, while playing as a defensive midfielder. McQuillan also earned a spot on the SLIAC Second Team and was the SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 22-28.

Wright, a junior transfer from Hazelwood, Mo., recorded an impressive 6 goals and 4 assists this season. He was the SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 1-7

Panthers Shoot Past St. Louis College of Pharmacy

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-- The GC Men's Basketball team defeated the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, 119-80 on the road.

Offensively, GC had many players contribute to the win, with 13 different men scoring points for the team. Alex Mumphard recorded 29 points for Greenville, leading the team in scoring. Anthony Meztler scored 19 points for the Panthers, the second most for any GC player in the game. MarQuel Jones and Ben Giertz each had 4 assists in the game.

Defensively, Greenville ended the game with 33 rebounds and 14 steals. Tevin Rollins was a huge defensive presence for GC, recording 14 defensive rebounds, 4 blocks, and 4 steals.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy was led by Clayton Earhart, who scored 30 points and recorded 5 rebounds in the game.

The Panthers will play away once again Thursday, Nov. 29th when they take on SLIAC opponent Principia College at 8:00pm.

NCCAA Victory Bowl Goes to Overtime as Panthers Slip by Eagles 28-27

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The top two teams in the NCCAA came together Saturday in Greenville for the 2012 Victory Bowl and proved that was where they belonged as the Greenville Panthers topped the Northwestern Eagles 28-27 in overtime.

After a scoreless first quarter, Northwestern (8-3) took a 14-0 lead into halftime as quarterback Josh Balzer connected with Brian Lecheler for two touchdown strikes.  The first of the two scores was an 88-yard hookup on the second play following a Greenville turnover and the second was a two-yard pass with just 15 seconds remaining in the half.

The third quarter scoring belonged to Greenville (8-2) as offensive player of the game Brendan Chambers ran for a 9-yard touchdown just 4:58 into the period.  Less than two minutes later, Chambers connected with receiver Anthony Gonzalez for an 80-yard touchdown pass.

Running back Justin Honeycutt gave Greenville its first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter with a two yard touchdown rush, and Tim Youtzy ran in a two yard score with 4:10 remaining in regulation to tie the game.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game in the final minutes as Greenville had a three-and-out, both teams threw an interception, and Northwestern fumbled with 29 seconds remaining.

Greenville kicker Josh Frewin missed a 27-yard field goal as time expired to push the game to overtime.

In overtime, Greenville won the coin toss and elected to put its defense on the field.  After eight plays, Youtzy ran the ball in for the go-ahead touchdown, but placekicker Ethan Zepp's point-after attempt failed.

Greenville ran the ball five times on their overtime possession, closed out by a three yard touchdown run by Chambers.  Frewin made the point-after, giving Greenville a 28-27 win.

Greenville's offense outgained Northwestern's by almost a two to one margin as the Panthers picked up 626 yards of total offense to the Eagles' 327.  Greenville's quarterback Chambers accounted for nearly two-thirds of the Panthers yards as he was 15-of-30 passing for 310 yards and one touchdown while running for 110 yards and two touchdowns in his offensive player of the game performance.

Running back Immanuel Gamble gained 115 yards rushing, and Anthony Gonzalez picked up184 receiving yards.

Northwestern's offense was led by Balzer who was 12-of-20 for 195 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Lecheler was on the receiving end for 127 yards and both touchdowns.

Running back Youtzy gained 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Northwestern's defense was led by defensive player of the game Josh Swore who collected 5.5 tackles including an assisted tackle for  a loss of one yards.

The Eagles leading tackler was Joey Bauman who picked up a game-high 13.5 tackles with 11 solo tackles and five assists.  Luke Sommerlet and Mitch Swanson had interceptions for Northwestern.

Greenville's defense was paced by Robert Deering and Cody Lopez with 11 tackles each.  Deering collected seven solo tackles and eight assists, while Lopez gained six solo tackles and 10 assists.  Lopez also tallied a quarterback sack and forced a fumble.  Anthony Moore posted an interception.

After ending the season as UMAC conference tri-champions with St. Scholastica, Greenville and Northwestern capped solid seasons with outstanding performances on Saturday.

The Victory Bowl win was Greenville's first in four games, and their eight wins this season tied a program high.  Northwestern made their sixth appearance in NCCAA football's showcase event, posting wins over Greenville in 2000 and Malone in 2008.
